Whereas, the Honorable James E. Mayes of Mayesville, Sumter County,
has died at the age of eighty-one; and
Whereas, Mr. Mayes served as the Mayor of Mayesville for twenty
years, and he has been called "one of the South's last giants in the
cotton industry"; and
Whereas, until six years ago, he ran an 8,000-acre cotton operation just
outside of Mayesville, and he was past president of the National Cotton
Council and a past chairman of the Sumter School District 2 Board of
Trustees; and
Whereas, affectionately known as "Bubba Jim", Mr. Mayes
was a beloved individual with a dynamic personality who contributed
greatly to the cotton industry and to his community; and
Whereas, Mr. Mayes's longtime friend and colleague in the national
Cotton Council and cotton industry, C. Alexander Harvin, Jr., called Mr.
Mayes "one of the nation's greatest and most respected voices of
the cotton industry; he will be missed by all of us who knew and greatly
respected him"; and
Whereas, we want his family and many friends to know that they are
uppermost in our thoughts and have our deepest sympathy. Now,
therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
