A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS
OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF
SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE LEXINGTON HIGH SCHOOL
"LADY WILDCATS" SOFTBALL TEAM AND THEIR
COACHES FOR AN EXCEPTIONAL SEASON AND ON
CAPTURING THE 1997-98 CLASS AAAA STATE SOFTBALL
CHAMPIONSHIP.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud of
the Lexington High School Lady Wildcats Softball Team's overall
season record 36-3 during 1997-98; and
Whereas, after having been in the championship series last year, and
with eight starters back, expectations were very high for the Lady
Wildcats Softball Team this year. The expectations made the season
more stressful to the team, but the girls responded and won when
they had to win; and
Whereas, the exceptional Lady Wildcats set a school record of 36
games en route to the team's first championship since 1992.
Lexington finished state runnerup in 1995 and 1997; and
Whereas, in the last nine years the Lady Wildcats have won 216 and
lost 59 games. They have won five region titles, four Upper State
titles, and two state championships; and
Whereas, twice in the playoffs they were down by two runs in the
bottom of the seventh inning, and both times the team came through
with key hits and managed to win; and
Whereas, the Lady Wildcats clinched the 1997-98 State
Championship by defeating Spring Valley 7-3 and 11-1 for the title;
and
Whereas, the Lexington Lady Wildcats team consisted of Anna Rawl,
Sarah Areheart, Stacey Vick, Presley Smith, Stacey Fintak, Laura
Nichols, Kate Graham, Sarah Roberson, Crystal Bennett, Tashay
Jones, Briani Bennett, Sherri Sullivan, Nicole Dail, Katie Finklea,
Rhonda Johnson, and Aren Colston; and
Whereas, this impressive level of competition could not have been
accomplished without the leadership and guidance of Head Coach
Scott Jumper, along with Assistant Coaches Sloan Sox and Joey
Lawson; and
Whereas, winning the state championship is a true testimony to the
talent and desire for excellence of the players, coaches, and school
officials of Lexington High School; and
Whereas, these fine young athletes have brought great pride and
recognition not only upon Lexington High School and its loyal and
enthusiastic students and supporters, but also to the State of South
Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of
South Carolina hereby express their congratulations to the Lexington
High School Lady Wildcats Softball Team and their coaches for an
exceptional season and on capturing the 1997-98 Class AAAA State
Softball Championship.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Head Coach Scott Jumper.
