A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

REQUESTING THE BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS OF THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR TO RECOGNIZE THE EDISTO NATCHEZ KUSSO TRIBE OF SOUTH CAROLINA FOR PURPOSES OF ALL FEDERAL PROGRAMS OPERATED BY THE BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS FOR NATIVE AMERICANS.

Whereas, the area comprising the territory of the State of South Carolina has been the home of Indian tribes and peoples prior to colonial times; and

Whereas, these Indian tribes have maintained their cultural distinctiveness and have greatly enriched the state's history and culture; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the State to request the acknowledgement and recognition of the identity of the Indian tribes and organizations hitherto not recognized. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the General Assembly requests the Bureau of Indian Affairs of the United States Department of the Interior to recognize the following Indian tribes and organizations whose members reside within its borders:

(1) the Edisto Natchez Kusso tribe whose members now reside in Dorchester, Colleton, and Charleston Counties;

(2) the Pee Dee tribe whose members now reside in Dillon, Marlboro, and Marion Counties;

(3) the Santee tribe whose members now reside in Berkeley, Calhoun, and Orangeburg Counties;

(4) the Piedmont American Indian Association and other urban Indian organizations whose members consist of individual members of recognized tribes in this or other states.

Be it further resolved that the provisions of this resolution are effective only for the purposes of eligibility of any programs for native Americans after this resolution has been adopted.
