A HOUSE RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING THE LAMAR HIGH SCHOOL "SILVER FOXES" OF DARLINGTON COUNTY ON THEIR THIRD CONSECUTIVE CLASS A FOOTBALL TITLE, AND HONORING THE PLAYERS AND COACH J. R. BOYD ON THEIR UNDEFEATED 15-0 SEASON.
Whereas, the Lamar High School "Silver Foxes" of Darlington County capped an undefeated 2004 football season with a 26-0 victory over the Calhoun Falls High School "Blue Flashes" of Abbeville County in the Class A championship game; and
Whereas, the Lamar defense, which smothered opponents all season-long, stayed true to form in the championship; and
Whereas, the offense played mistake-free, moved the ball effectively, and took advantage of great field position; and
Whereas, the Lamar defense held Calhoun Falls scoreless, allowing only one-hundred and thirty yards offense while forcing four turnovers. Meanwhile, the offense piled up almost two-hundred yards behind a strong running game combined with enough passing to keep the Blue Flashes honest; and
Whereas, the Silver Foxes opened the scoring on their second possession. A stout defensive stand combined with an eleven-yard punt return gave Lamar's offense a short field beginning its drive on the Calhoun Falls thirty-three yard line. On fourth and five quarterback Markee Hamlin hit Desmond Benjamin with a screen pass and he raced down the sideline for a twenty-eight yard score; and
Whereas, the Lamar Special teams would strike just before halftime as Latron Jackson fielded a Calhoun Falls punt and went untouched for forty-eight yards, scoring the game's second touchdown; and
Whereas, Calhoun Falls threatened midway through the fourth quarter with Lamar up 20-0. The Blue Flashes faced first and goal at the two-yard line. The Lamar defense, however, was well prepared for the challenge, and with two consecutive sacks preserved the shut-out; and
Whereas, after the goal line stand, Desmond Benjamin scored on a seventy-five yard touchdown run, his third of the day. Benjamin garnered Most Valuable Player honors rushing for one-hundred twenty-six yards on thirteen carries; and
Whereas, this terrific finish for the 2004 team, an undefeated season along with Lamar's third consecutive state title, truly signifies that Lamar is currently the dominant power in Class A Football. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives do hereby congratulate the Lamar High School "Silver Foxes" of Darlington County on their third consecutive Class A title, and honor the players and Coach J. R. Boyd on their undefeated 15-0 season.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Football Coach J. R. Boyd on behalf of the championship team.
