H. 3587

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND ELIZABETH VICTOR, A SENIOR AT AIKEN HIGH SCHOOL, FOR DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING A GIRLS AGAINST BULLIES (GAB) MENTORING PROGRAM IN HER COMMUNITY WHICH HAS PROVIDED SO MUCH HELP TO ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED AGGRESSION FROM PEERS IN A SCHOOL SETTING.

Whereas, Elizabeth Victor, a senior at Aiken High School, has made a significant contribution to address the social and cultural challenges of her community and State; and

Whereas, with great innovation, she created Girls Against Bullying (GAB), a mentoring program for elementary and middle school girls who have experienced bullying in a school setting; and

Whereas, there is strong evidence that young girls in the fifth through eighth grades are often driven from school or have struggled through the experience because of relational aggression from peers; and

Whereas, the mentoring program, a four-week experience, addresses topics such as the definition and recognition of bullying, specific behaviors involved with bullying, the effect of such actions, and resources for getting help; and

Whereas, this year, Elizabeth's program was pilot-tested in four middle schools, an alternative school, and two after school programs in Aiken County, and this spring the program will be placed in all middle schools and in most fifth grades in her school district; and

Whereas, Elizabeth has been recognized for her efforts by the Hitachi Foundation through its Yoshiyana Award for Exemplary Service to the Community. In addition, she has been named one of the top youth volunteers for South Carolina for 2005 in the tenth annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program. She will also be recognized by the State Board of Education on Wednesday, March 9, 2005, for her development of this wonderful program; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to recognize and commend this truly outstanding young woman for her innovative GAB program that will improve the lives of so many young girls in her community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly recognize and commend Elizabeth Victor, a senior at Aiken High School, for developing and implementing a Girls Against Bullies (GAB) mentoring program in her community which has provided so much help to elementary and middle school girls who have experienced aggression from peers in a school setting.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Elizabeth Victor.
