A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE JOHN H. MAGILL, STATE DIRECTOR OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF PreviousMENTAL HEALTHNext, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS OVER FIFTY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE IN THE PreviousMENTAL HEALTHNext FIELD, AND TO WISH HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize John H. Magill upon the occasion of his retirement on January 11, 2019; and

Whereas, with a genuine commitment to the mental well-being of all South Carolinians, John Magill has accomplished many positive achievements in his career, including significant improvements and expansion in the Previousmental healthNext services provided to children and adults in the State and in public awareness and appreciation for the critical importance of accessible Previousmental healthNext services; and

Whereas, John Magill began his distinguished career at the Department of PreviousMental HealthNext in the late 1960s, at what was known at the time as the South Carolina State Hospital. In 2006, he returned to the Department of PreviousMental HealthNext as its State Director, and he has the distinction of being the longest-serving state Previousmental healthNext director in the nation, with thirteen years in the position; and

Whereas, under his leadership, the department was able to substantially increase the Previousmental healthNext services available to children in public schools and to develop telepsychiatry programs, which have provided more than one hundred thousand psychiatric services since their inception and have made the department the largest provider of telehealth services by volume in South Carolina; and

Whereas, John Magill has also served as the Georgia State Director for Alcohol and Drug Abuse, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Fenwick Hall Hospital, Deputy Chair of Operations in the Department of Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina, and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at both the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine's Department of Neuropsychiatry; and

Whereas, a man dedicated to service, John Magill has also served many other vulnerable populations in the State, including veterans in need of nursing home services, young people at risk of suicide, and patients in need of safe and affordable housing; and

Whereas, throughout his esteemed career, he has received a number of honors and awards, including, most recently, the Order of the Palmetto and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Dean's Distinguished Service Award; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate deeply appreciates the years of unparalleled dedication that John Magill has devoted to Previousmental healthNext service in the Palmetto State and wishes him many years of enjoyment in his well-earned retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate John H. Magill, State Director of the South Carolina Department of PreviousMental HealthNext, upon the occasion of his retirement, commend him for his over fifty years of dedicated service in the Previousmental health field, and wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to John H. Magill.
