AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT STROM THURMOND HIGH SCHOOL IN EDGEFIELD COUNTY SHALL HEREAFTER REMAIN SO NAMED AS TRIBUTE TO ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S PreviousMOSTNext DISTINGUISHED SONS, U.S. SENATOR STROM THURMOND.

Whereas, Strom Thurmond High School in Edgefield County was named for Senator Strom Thurmond by Edgefield County School Board in 1961 which was the year the high school was formed; and

Whereas, Strom Thurmond is widely known and respected throughout South Carolina and the nation as a political leader and statesman but before he became actively involved in politics he devoted ten years of his early professional career to education; and

Whereas, he served as a teacher and athletic coach in Edgefield, McCormick, and Ridge Spring from 1923 to 1929; and

Whereas, Senator Thurmond served as County Superintendent of Education for Edgefield County from 1929 to 1933; and

Whereas, he has established a scholarship program at Strom Thurmond High School for needy and worthy students, and has donated his desk and other memorabilia from his years in public office to the school; and

Whereas, his work in public education continued a tradition of educational service by the Thurmond family as his mother and all three of his sisters were public school teachers; and

Whereas, for the above reasons, the members of the General Assembly believe that Strom Thurmond High School, the only high school of Edgefield County, should forever be named after this distinguished South Carolinian as a tribute to his service as educator, lawyer, military hero, and state and national political leader.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Strom Thurmond High School

SECTION 1. Strom Thurmond High School in Edgefield County shall hereafter remain so named as tribute to one of South Carolina's Previousmost distinguished sons, U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond.

Time effective
