General Assembly to the family of one of Greenville's most distinguished
physicians, Dr. Iverson O. Brownell, upon his death.

A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS
OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY OF ONE OF
GREENVILLE'S MOST DISTINGUISHED PHYSICIANS, DR.
IVERSON O. BROWNELL, UPON HIS DEATH.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were very saddened
to learn of the death of Dr. Iverson O. Brownell of Greenville on
January 11, 1993, at the age of seventy-six; and
Whereas, Dr. Brownell was a distinguished member of Greenville's
medical community and was also Greenville's first practicing
psychiatrist. He was a native of Oregon, and a graduate of Washington
State University. Dr. Brownell received his medical degree from Duke
University, interned at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, and did
post-graduate training at Duke University Hospital and at Fairfield
Hills State Hospital in Newtown, Connecticut; and
Whereas, he was certified in psychiatry by the American Board of
Psychiatry in 1952, came to Greenville as its first psychiatrist and
started the Mental Health Clinic. During his career, he served as
president of the medical staff of Greenville Hospital System, president
of Greenville County Medical Society, and medical director of
Marshall I. Pickens Hospital. In 1991, he was honored by having
Marshall I. Pickens Outpatient Service named the Brownell Diagnostic
Center; and
Whereas, Dr. Brownell was also a respected church and civic leader
in Greenville and was a Harris Fellow of the Greenville Rotary Club
and a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution,
would like to extend their sincere condolences to his wife, son, and
three daughters upon the death of this truly outstanding physician and
fine man. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly hereby express their
deepest sympathy to the family of one of Greenville's most
distinguished physicians, Dr. Iverson O. Brownell, upon his death.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his
widow, Mrs. Agnes Smith Brownell.
