 PREVENTION AWARENESS FOR THEIR WORK TO INFORM THE PUBLIC ON THE BENEFITS OF
 LONG TERM STROKE PREVENTION AND FOR THEIR EFFORTS IN IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF
 LIFE FOR THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO SUFFER STROKES EACH YEAR.

TO RECOGNIZE THE NATIONAL COALITION FOR STROKE PREVENTION AWARENESS FOR THEIR WORK TO INFORM THE PUBLIC ON THE BENEFITS OF LONG TERM STROKE PREVENTION AND FOR THEIR EFFORTS IN IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO SUFFER STROKES EACH YEAR.

Whereas, it is with great pride and sincere admiration that the members of the South Carolina General Assembly pause to acknowledge the significant achievements of a wonderful organization dedicated to improving the lives and health of others; and

Whereas, the National Coalition for Stroke Prevention Awareness is working to improve the quality of life for those stricken with atrial fibrillation and is committed to long term stroke prevention education; and

Whereas, atrial fibrillation is a condition in which two upper chambers of the heart quiver instead of beating effectively; and

Whereas, the most common persistent cardiac arrhythmia known as atrial fibrillation affects more than two million people each year within the United States; and

Whereas, the prevalence of atrial fibrillation increases with age, virtually doubling with each decade in persons fifty years of age or older; and

Whereas, more than forty thousand South Carolina Medicare adults have atrial fibrillation, which is responsible for nearly eighty thousand strokes each year in the United States; and

Whereas, education and stroke prevention programs can play an integral role in the lives of those who suffer from atrial fibrillation by reducing their chances of having a stroke; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus has teamed up with the National Coalition for Stroke Prevention Awareness to create Stroke Awareness Day to be held in May 2001; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to express their sincere appreciation to the National Coalition for Stroke Prevention Awareness as it continues to inform the public on the benefits of long-term stroke prevention education. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, hereby recognize the National Coalition for Stroke Prevention Awareness for their work to inform the public on the benefits of long-term stroke prevention and for their efforts in improving the quality of life for those individuals who suffer strokes each year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the National Coalition for Stroke Prevention Awareness.
