A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND THANK PROVOST AND VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS JOHN IDOUX OF COASTAL CAROLINA UNIVERSITY FOR HIS LEADERSHIP AND OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO COASTAL CAROLINA UNIVERSITY AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA OVER MANY YEARS, AND WISH HIM EVERY SUCCESS IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, John Idoux, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Coastal Carolina University since 1994, has accepted a position with the Tarleton State University system in Texas, effective August 1, 2001. He will remain at Coastal through July of 2001; and

Whereas, Idoux was named Coastal Carolina University's first provost in July 1994, following the university's independence from the University of South Carolina in 1993; and

Whereas, John Idoux was instrumental in building the academic reputation of Coastal Carolina University and his commitment to scholarship and teaching garnered nationalNext recognition for Coastal Carolina. He had a leading role in securing a PreviousNationalNext Science Foundation grant in 1998 which recognized the university's integration of teaching and research and placed Coastal Carolina among some of the elite institutions of the PreviousnationNext; and

Whereas, the provost is the chief academic officer of the university and reports to the president. During Idoux's tenure at Coastal Carolina, the E. Craig Wall, Sr., College of Business Administration earned accreditation from the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business International, the association to advance collegiate schools of business. Only the top twenty-five percent of the more than one thousand two hundred colleges and universities in the PreviousnationNext offering business degrees earn American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business accreditation; and

Whereas, in 1998, during Idoux's tenure, the College of Education earned accreditation from the PreviousNationalNext Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and in May the Department of Art earned accreditation from the PreviousNationalNext Association of Schools of Art and Design. Since 1993, the average SAT score for entering freshmen at Coastal has improved to exceed the Previousnational average; and

Whereas, John Idoux's leadership and guiding hand over the years has greatly helped Coastal Carolina become the fine university it is today. The university now offers baccalaureate degree programs in forty fields, masters' degrees in education and five cooperative programs with other South Carolina colleges and universities. New programs were recently added in Spanish and music, and several more are being considered. International exchange programs have expanded to reach institutions in Spain, Germany, Australia, India, England, Sweden, and Austria; and

Whereas, Idoux will be the executive director for Tarleton-Central Texas, an extension of Tarleton State University, which has been a member of the Texas A&M University System since 1917. A Houston native, Idoux earned a Ph.D. and a master's degree, both in chemistry, from Texas A&M University. He has rendered splendid service to Coastal Carolina University, and the members of the House of Representatives want to thank him for a job well done and wish him every success in his new position as executive director for Tarleton-Central Texas. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend and thank provost and vice president for academic affairs John Idoux of Coastal Carolina University for his leadership and outstanding service to Coastal Carolina University and the State of South Carolina over many years, and wish him every success in all of his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. John Idoux of Coastal Carolina University.
