A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DR. WASHINGTON RAY, JR., OF SUMTER ON RECEIVING THE HUMANITARIAN AWARD AT THE SUMTER BRANCH OF THE PreviousNATIONALNext ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE FREEDOM FUND AWARDS BANQUET ON NOVEMBER 8, 2002, COMMEND HIS HARD WORK AND DEDICATION TO PROMOTING RACIAL EQUALITY, AND WISH HIM EVERY SUCCESS IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Dr. Washington Ray, Jr., graduated from Howard University and observed the struggle for civil rights first hand. He decided that after graduation, he would use his education to help others; and

Whereas, Dr. Ray has been an active member of the Sumter Branch of the PreviousNationalNext Association for the Advancement of Colored People for twelve years. He is a member of the Executive Committee and has served as first vice president and chairman of the Health Affairs Committee. Dr. Ray is currently a member of the South Carolina State Conference Executive Committee and has served as chairman of the State Health Affairs Committee for the past five years; and

Whereas, at the 2002 PreviousNationalNext Association for the Advancement of Colored People State Convention, Dr. Ray introduced a resolution that would require the state and local branches to support the PreviousnationalNext effort to "Take a Relative to the Doctor Campaign" in September of each year. Dr. Ray has provided dental services pro bono to those who could not pay; and

Whereas, he is a member of the PreviousNationalNext Dental Association, the American Dental Association, the Palmetto Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical Association, and the Pee Dee District Dental Association. He is a member of Saint Jude Catholic Church and serves on the Parish Council and as a trustee on the Saint Jude Elementary School Board; and

Whereas, Dr. Ray is married to Elizabeth S. Ray, a Spanish teacher at Manning High School and Morris College. They have three sons who aspire to become health care providers like their father: Arian, Dustin, Geoffrey; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to recognize Dr. Washington Ray, Jr., for his commitment to promoting racial equality and for providing dental care to those in need. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Washington Ray, Jr., of Sumter on receiving the Humanitarian Award at the Sumter Branch of the PreviousNational Association for the Advancement of Colored People Freedom Fund Awards Banquet on November 8, 2002, commend his hard work and dedication to promoting racial equality, and wish him every success in his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Washington Ray, Jr., of Sumter.
