A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR JOHN A. SHULER, DEPUTY ADJUTANT GENERAL FOR STATE OPERATIONS OF THE OFFICE OF THE ADJUTANT GENERAL, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE MILITARY DEPARTMENT OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to learn that John A. Shuler will begin a much-deserved retirement from the Military Department of South Carolina after five and a half decades of service on March 31, 2011; and

Whereas, born in Orangeburg, he graduated from Bowman High School and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, in 1956, John Shuler enlisted in the South Carolina Army NationalNext Guard as a teenager and served for five years before his acceptance into the South Carolina Army PreviousNationalNext Guards' Palmetto Military Academy; and

Whereas, upon graduation from the Academy, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army PreviousNationalNext Guard, and since then he has served in various positions of increasing responsibilities, retiring at the grade of colonel; and

Whereas, he successfully completed Transportation and Quartermaster Officer Basic Courses, Ordinance and Quartermaster Advanced Courses, and Command and General Staff College; and

Whereas, as the deputy adjutant general for State Operations, his responsibilities have consisted of the executive oversight of the South Carolina State Guard, Emergency Management Division, the South Carolina Army PreviousNationalNext Guard facility programs, PreviousNationalNext Guard youth programs, and all other state programs that support the Military Department of South Carolina; and

Whereas, his numerous awards for outstanding service include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, PreviousNationalNext Defense Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Training Ribbon; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are grateful for the fifty-five years of dedicated service that John A. Shuler has given to the South Carolina Army PreviousNational Guard and the Military Department of South Carolina, and they wish him continued success and happiness in his well-earned retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor John A. Shuler, deputy adjutant general for State Operations of the Office of the Adjutant General, and congratulate him, upon the occasion of his retirement from the Military Department of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to John A. Shuler.
