A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE JOEL A. SMITH III, OF COLUMBIA, PRESIDENT OF PreviousNATIONSBANKNext, N.A. (CAROLINAS), UPON BEING NAMED 1996 AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR BY THE GREATER COLUMBIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

Whereas, members of the General Assembly were pleased to learn that one of Columbia's most distinguished and respected business leaders, Joel A. Smith III, was named 1996 Ambassador of the Year by the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce; and

Whereas, he is currently president of PreviousNationsBankNext, N.A. (Carolinas), a position he has held since 1987. He began his career with PreviousNationsBankNext in 1971 upon retiring from the United States Navy. Prior to his current position, he was senior vice president and regional executive of PreviousNationsBankNext South Carolina; and

Whereas, Joel Smith serves on the boards of directors of numerous state and local community and civic organizations and is chairman of the Central Carolina Economic Development Alliance. He is a trustee with the South Carolina Foundation of Independent Colleges, treasurer of the South Carolina ETV Endowment, member of the board of directors of the Central Carolina Community Foundation, and member of the advisory board of Benedict College. He also currently serves as president of Spoleto Festival USA; and

Whereas, Joel Smith for many years has played a key role in the economic development of the City of Columbia and the State of South Carolina which has left a profound impact on Columbia and our State. South Carolina is indeed blessed to have talented and able business executives such as he who give so freely of their time and talents to their communities and to their fellow man; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and congratulate this truly outstanding native South Carolinian upon his receipt of this richly deserved award. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina hereby congratulate Joel A. Smith III, of Columbia, President of PreviousNationsBank, N.A. (Carolinas), upon his being named 1996 Ambassador of the Year by the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Smith.
