 YEARS OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP OF THIS GREAT HOUSE OF GOD.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE DR. ANDREW J. CHISHOM, PASTOR OF ZION CHAPEL BAPTIST CHURCH NO. 1 IN RICHLAND COUNTY FOR HIS TEN YEARS OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP OF THIS GREAT HOUSE OF GOD.

Whereas, during the week of July 10, 2000, through July 16, 2000, the congregation of Zion Chapel Baptist Church No. 1 in Richland County will celebrate Dr. Andrew Chishom's tenth anniversary as its pastor; and

Whereas, Dr. Andrew J. Chishom received his undergraduate degree in criminology from the University of Maryland, and both his Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of Georgia, and has completed studies for his Masters in Theology at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and Post Doctorate studies at Harvard University; and

Whereas, he served his nationNext with distinction from 1963 to 1966, as a member of the United States Air Force, and since 1979 has been a member of the United States Navy's Ready Reserves; and

Whereas, Dr. Chishom was appointed as the first African-American Juvenile Parole Officer in South Carolina in 1969, and has served as Chairman of the Greenville, South Carolina, Drug Abuse Council; and

Whereas, in 1971, former Governor Jimmy Carter appointed Dr. Chishom as the first African-American Probation Supervisor in the State of Georgia; and

Whereas, in 1974, he was employed as the first African-American Professor in the College of Criminal Justice at the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, in 1976, President Jimmy Carter appointed Dr. Chishom as the first African-American United States Marshal in the South since Reconstruction; and

Whereas, today, Dr. Chishom serves as a full-tenured Professor in the College of Criminal Justice at the University of South Carolina, and in 1990 was recognized by the University's Mortar Board as an "Outstanding Professor"; and

Whereas, he also serves as director of the PreviousnationallyNext recognized Southern Region Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention Center whose mission is to assist school-based sites in ten Southern cities to address crime, violence, and substance abuse prevention among students; and

Whereas, Dr. Chishom's many accomplishments include Co-founder, first PreviousNationalNext Chairman and Chairman Emeritus of the PreviousNationalNext Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice (NABCJ); Founder and President of the PreviousNationalNext Institute for the Prevention and Treatment of Substance Abuse; Founder and Chairman of the Five-Point Youth Violence Prevention Program; Founder of the Columbia Midnight Basketball Program; and serving as a criminal justice consultant to the State of Florida, Scotland Yard, the country of Egypt, and the United States Department of Justice; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina would like to take this opportunity to publicly recognize Dr. Chishom, one of our State and Previousnation's distinguished men of God on the occasion of his tenth anniversary of pastorship at Zion Chapel Baptist Church No. 1. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Dr. Andrew J. Chishom, Pastor of Zion Chapel Baptist Church No. 1 in Richland County for his ten years of outstanding service and leadership of this great House of God.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Chishom.
