 A HOUSE RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE THE BRAVE SERVICEMEN AND SERVICEWOMEN OF THE
 UNITED STATES ARMY RESERVE WHO HAVE PLEDGED, AND IN MANY INSTANCES SACRIFICED,
 THEIR LIVES IN DEFENSE OF OUR NATION AND OUR CHERISHED FREEDOMS AND LIBERTIES,
 AND TO PAY HOMAGE TO THEM UPON THE OCCASION OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY
 OF THE ARMY RESERVES.

TO RECOGNIZE THE BRAVE SERVICEMEN AND SERVICEWOMEN OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY RESERVE WHO HAVE PLEDGED, AND IN MANY INSTANCES SACRIFICED, THEIR LIVES IN DEFENSE OF OUR NATION AND OUR CHERISHED FREEDOMS AND LIBERTIES, AND TO PAY HOMAGE TO THEM UPON THE OCCASION OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARMY RESERVES.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives derive satisfaction in acknowledging that throughout a century of existence, the United States Army Reserve has always been ready to answer the nation's call to serve during times of emergency, both in peace and in war; and

Whereas, when George Washington and Alexander Hamilton proposed a contingency force to support the Army that would be centrally controlled by the federal government, the seed was planted for the Army Reserve that eventually came into existence on April 23, 1908, with Congressional authorization for the Medical Reserve Corps; and

Whereas, rooted in the tradition of the American revolutionaries, the Army Reserve exists today through a provision of the Army Appropriations Act of 1912 to create a federal-reserve force outside of the Medical Reserve Corps; and

Whereas, from 1916 through 1920, the federal government expanded this reserve corps into a federally operated reserve force, whose soldiers have trained and served with excellence in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, Panama, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, the Iraq War, and the Global War on Terror; and

Whereas, this reserve force, the United States Army Reserve, consists of two hundred five thousand warrior-citizens, a specialized, complementary, and skill-rich force, which continues to play a vital role in our country's homeland security and our national security affairs abroad; and

Whereas, since 1990, Army Reserve soldiers have been deployed to support every American military operation, including peacekeeping and humanitarian missions, and will continue their tradition of distinguished service and sacrifice today and in the future; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives take pride in renewing their commitment to the United States Army Reserve as it celebrates one hundred years of dedication to the common principle of defending this great nation against enemies anywhere in the world and to the broader cause of pursuing peace at home. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize the brave servicemen and servicewomen of the United States Army Reserve who have pledged, and in many instances sacrificed, their lives in defense of our nation and our cherished freedoms and liberties, and pay homage to them upon the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the Army Reserve.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to General Jeffery Jacobs.
