VERSIONS OF THIS BILL

2/12/2008

H. 4667

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE GEORGETOWN COUNTY LIBRARY IN THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN ON BEING AWARDED A 2007 PreviousNATIONALNext MEDAL FOR MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICE, TO COMMEND THE LIBRARY FOR THE OUTSTANDING JOB IT DOES IN SERVING THE CITIZENS OF GEORGETOWN COUNTY, AND TO WISH THIS VENERABLE INSTITUTION MUCH CONTINUED SUCCESS IN THE FUTURE.

Whereas, the Georgetown County Library, founded in 1799 and long respected as an exemplary library system, has been awarded a 2007 PreviousNationalNext Medal for Museum and Library Service, the PreviousnationNext's highest honor for extraordinary community service on the part of a library or museum; and

Whereas, awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which is the primary source of federal support for 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums, the PreviousNationalNext Medal for Museum and Library Service carries with it a ten-thousand-dollar prize for each recipient and an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.; and

Whereas, in order to win a PreviousNationalNext Medal for Museum and Library Service, an institution must demonstrate "extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service, exceeding the expected level of community outreach and core programs generally associated with its services." The Georgetown County Library, the first South Carolina library to be honored with a PreviousNationalNext Medal for Museum and Library Service since the inception of the awards, has proven itself to be a worthy recipient; and

Whereas, in a county with greater challenges in the areas of literacy and income, the Georgetown County Library has succeeded by launching programs designed to encourage all residents, regardless of age or background, to think big and ponder big questions. For example, the library has sponsored lectures, exhibitions, documentaries, oral-history videos, storytelling, dance, and music that bring residents together on the topic of race and reconciliation. Among numerous other endeavors, it also has hosted two PreviousnationalNext exhibitions, donated collections of books to forty-two childcare centers, inaugurated a program to help adults learn how to read, and established adult continuing education courses; and

Whereas, showing no signs of slowing down in its mission, the Georgetown County Library, while boosting library card membership to seventy percent, has emerged as a PreviousnationalNext treasure by inspiring residents to embrace their heritage and dream of a bright future, armed with literacy, pride, and knowledge; and

Whereas, the General Assembly takes great pleasure in applauding this outstanding achievement of the Georgetown County Library, capably led by visionary director Dwight McInvaill and his staff, and looks forward to hearing of its continued and laudable service in years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate the Georgetown County Library in the City of Georgetown on being awarded a 2007 PreviousNational Medal for Museum and Library Service, commend the library for the outstanding job it does in serving the citizens of Georgetown County, and wish this venerable institution much continued success in the future.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Georgetown County Library.
