RECOGNIZING THE 2002 OBSERVANCE OF NATIONAL AGRICULTURE DAY ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 2002, AND ENCOURAGING ALL SOUTH CAROLINIANS TO REFLECT ON THE CENTRAL ROLE OF AGRICULTURE IN THIS STATE AND THE UNITED STATES AS THE BASIS FOR OUR FOOD, FIBER, SHELTER, AND INCREASINGLY, FUEL, AND EXPRESS APPRECIATION FOR THE HARDWORKING MEN AND WOMEN WHO COMPRISE OUR STATE'S AND THE NATION'S AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the first day of Spring is observed in this State and the United States as National Agriculture Day, a day when we turn our thoughts in gratitude to the hardworking men and women who produce the raw materials for our food, fiber, and shelter; and

Whereas, in the days since the murderous attacks of September 11, 2001, the need for sources of renewable fuel here at home to reduce our dependence on foreign oil has been brought home to all Americans; and

Whereas, the immense productivity of America's and South Carolina's agricultural community to produce crops that can be used as a source of renewable energy, is a resource too long overlooked or ignored which through additional research and improved technology could go far toward providing the nation's "energy independence"; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations in order to recognize the role of agriculture in the life of this State and the nation, as the source of our food, fiber, and shelter, and potentially, energy. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize the 2002 observance of National Agriculture Day on March 20, 2002, and encourage all South Carolinians to join them to reflect on the central role of agriculture in this State and the United States as the basis for our food, fiber, shelter, and increasingly, fuel and express appreciation for the hardworking men and women who comprise our State's and the nation's agriculture community.
