H. 3931

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MAJOR GENERAL GERALD EDWARD HARMON, OF GEORGETOWN COUNTY, FOR HIS EXTRAORDINARY CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS COMMUNITY AND COUNTRY AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE AIR PreviousNATIONALNext GUARD.

Whereas, a Newberry native, Major General Gerald Edward "Gerry" Harmon spent his childhood moving around the south with his father's job as a cotton mill supervisor; and

Whereas, a 1969 graduate of Newberry High School, Major General Harmon attended the University of South Carolina and graduated with a degree in physics and mathematics. Thereafter, he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree at the Medical University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, completing an internship at the General Clinical Research Unit in 1977, he commenced his Family Practice Residency at Elgin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Florida; and

Whereas, continuing to serve in the Air PreviousNationalNext Guard in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Major General Harmon also assumed the role of PreviousNationalNext Guard Assistant to the Surgeon General of the Air Force, requiring him to dedicate approximately one hundred days per year in this position; and

Whereas, across the course of his exceptional career as a military doctor, Major General Harmon received numerous honors and awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the PreviousNationalNext Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Organizational Excellence Award, and the Palmetto Service Ribbon, among many others; and

Whereas, in 1983, he joined Waccamaw Family Practice in Georgetown, which has grown to three practices with ten partners. He also serves the local community as the Medical Director for Baskerville, a free clinic at Pawleys Island; and

Whereas, active in the Georgetown community, Major General Harmon served as the Chief of Staff of Georgetown Memorial Hospital from 1987 until 1989, on the Board of Directors of Georgetown Health Group, as a Delegate to the South Carolina Medical Association, and as President of the Georgetown County Medical Society, among other community involvements; and

Whereas, a devoted family man despite his often-hectic schedule, Major General Harmon shares a loving marriage with his wife, Linda Driggers Harmon. Together, they are the proud parents of three children; and

Whereas, steadfast in his faith, Major General Harmon is a member of Duncan United Methodist Church, where he has taught Sunday School for teenagers; and

Whereas, truly selfless with his time and talents, he has made several humanitarian trips with the PreviousNationalNext Guard to Africa, Jamaica, and Honduras, and was activated during the early days after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita; and

Whereas, a father himself, Dr. Harmon understood the grief of Representative Carl Anderson upon his son's heroic death while serving as an Air Force Airman First Class in Iraq. Carl Anderson, Jr. gave the last full measure of devotion to his country, and Dr. Harmon graciously provided his assistance in returning the Georgetown native home; and

Whereas, it is with great pride that the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina pause in their deliberations to honor this extraordinary South Carolina son for his commitment to his community and to this PreviousnationNext. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Major General Gerald Edward Harmon, of Georgetown County, for his extraordinary contributions to his community and country, and wish him all the best upon his retirement from the Air PreviousNational Guard.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Major General Gerald Edward Harmon.
