APPLAUDING SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY, OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY, ON ITS GRACIOUS AND IMPECCABLE UNDERTAKING AS HOST OF THE FIRST NATIONAL DEBATE OF 2008 DEMOCRATIC PARTY CANDIDATES FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, AND EXPRESSING THE GRATITUDE OF THE STATE'S CITIZENS FOR THE UNIVERSITY'S ROLE IN SPOTLIGHTING FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE ALL THAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, South Carolina State University alumnus, Majority Leader of the United States House of Representatives James Clyburn, had the vision to offer the University as the host for the first national debate of 2008 Democratic Party candidates for President of the United States; and

Whereas, its President, Dr. Andrew Hugine, and the University's Board of Trustees enthusiastically adopted that vision as their own; and

Whereas, the faculty, staff, and students of the historically black University undertook the careful but exciting planning and implementation necessary to producing an event of national and international proportions; and

Whereas, the City and County of Orangeburg, and their residents, joined in the production, recognizing the unique opportunity to be placed in the national and international spotlight; and

Whereas, when the spotlights finally shone on the stage of Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium on April 26, 2007, the stars of the debate included not only the eight Democratic presidential candidates, but also South Carolina State University and the Orangeburg Community; and

Whereas, from accommodating thousands of national, statewide, and local ticketholders to the debate itself and to the viewing in Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Coliseum, hundreds of national and international media outlets, and the politically knowledgeable and enthusiastic students on the campus, the University showcased itself, as well as the candidates, with aplomb; and

Whereas, Representative Clyburn, a favorite son, may have had the vision for South Carolina State University, it was the University that claimed that dream for itself and for South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, applaud South Carolina State University, of Orangeburg, on its gracious and impeccable undertaking as host of the first national debate of 2008 Democratic Party candidates for President of the United States, and express the gratitude of the State's citizens for the University's role in spotlighting for all the world to see all that is special about South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to South Carolina State University President, Dr. Andrew Hugine, and the University's Board of Trustees.
