THE GENERAL COMMITTEE
To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H. 3411),
memorializing Congress to provide for a National Cemetery, etc.,
respectfully
REPORT:
That they have duly and carefully considered the same, and
recommend that the same do pass:
ADDISON G. WILSON, for Committee.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
MEMORIALIZING CONGRESS TO PROVIDE FOR A
NATIONAL CEMETERY TO BE LOCATED AT FORT JACKSON
IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, veterans of the United States armed services and the
veterans' survivors and their families who reside in the Midlands area
of South Carolina in and around the capital city of Columbia, as well
as in western and northern South Carolina, presently must use the
national cemeteries in Florence or Beaufort -- cities which are
considerable distances from their homes; travel to these cemeteries
places an undue burden on these deserving citizens; and
Whereas, the need exists for the location of a national cemetery in the
Columbia, South Carolina, area where Fort Jackson is situated; and
Whereas, sufficient unused land exists on the Fort Jackson
installation for use as a national cemetery, and such a cemetery
should be established on this military base at the earliest possible
time. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, memorializes Congress to take the necessary steps to
provide for a national cemetery to be located at Fort Jackson in the
State of South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United
States House of Representatives, and the eight members of South
Carolina's Congressional Delegation, all at Washington, D.C.
