A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES TO NAME THE SANTEE RIVER BOAT LANDING WHERE U. S. HIGHWAY 17-A AND S. C. HIGHWAY 41 CROSS THE SANTEE RIVER ABOVE JAMESTOWN IN BERKELEY COUNTY THE "LENUD'S FERRY BOAT LANDING" IN RECOGNITION OF THE FORTY-ONE PATRIOTS WHO IN MAY OF 1780, GAVE THEIR LIVES TO SECURE AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE.

Whereas, Britain's Southern campaign during the American Revolutionary War was intended to end the stalemate in the North; and

Whereas, the British plan for putting down the rebellion by first controlling the Southern colonies and then sweeping north to total victory began well with the capture of Savannah in late 1778; and

Whereas, Lord Cornwallis then planned to move his troops north through the Carolina backcountry to provide encouragement to the loyalists there; and

Whereas, a significant engagement between American and British Forces occurred at Lenud's Ferry in Berkeley County in May of 1780; and

Whereas, forty-one Americans were killed and sixty-seven more were captured when British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton's cavalry ambushed the Patriots who were on their way to reinforce Charleston; and

Whereas, the skirmish at Lenud's Ferry set the stage for the infamous Battle of Waxhaws where Lieutenant Colonel Tarleton became known as "Bloody Ban", and for the remainder of the War in the South, "Tarleton's Quarter" meant no quarter and became a rallying cry for the Patriots; and

Whereas, the crushing British defeat at Yorktown, which secured American independence, is directly attributable to the valiant Patriots who turned the tide of the War in the South. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the Department of Natural Resources name the Santee River boat Landing where U. S. Highway 17-A and S. C. Highway 41 cross the Santee River above Jamestown in Berkeley County the "Lenud's Ferry Boat Landing" in recognition of the forty-one Patriots who in May of 1780, gave their lives to secure American independence.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Paul A. Sandifer, Director, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
