A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND CLARKE BYNUM FOR THE VALIANT DISPLAY OF HEROISM HE EXHIBITED BY SUBDUING A DERANGED PASSENGER AND SAVING THE LIVES OF THE THREE HUNDRED NINETY-EIGHT PEOPLE ABOARD HIS BRITISH AIRWAYS FLIGHT FROM LONDON TO NAIROBI.

Whereas, Clarke Bynum of Sumter, a businessman and former Clemson University basketball player, was on his way to Uganda for a two-week teaching mission with his friend Gifford Shaw when he helped save the lives of three hundred ninety-eight people aboard a British Airway's flight from London to Nairobi, a flight he was on only because he had missed his original flight due to inclement weather; and

Whereas, Bynum, who was sleeping in his seat near the aisle in business class, close to the cockpit, awoke to an estimated nineteen thousand foot drop in altitude. Hearing the screaming and clamor from the cockpit and realizing the imminence of death, Bynum instinctively knew he had to help; and

Whereas, Clarke Bynum and Gifford Shaw burst into the cockpit to find a Kenyan man, approximately six feet tall and two hundred twenty-five pounds, attacking the pilot and causing the plane to plummet; and

Whereas, Bynum grabbed the assailant around the torso and, with the help of Gifford Shaw and others, wrestled him to the ground and pulled him from the cockpit to a seat where the assailant was handcuffed and strapped in for the remaining two hours of the flight; and

Whereas, the plane landed safely in Nairobi with passengers and crew suffering only minor injuries; and

Whereas, Clarke Bynum believes that God put him and Gifford Shaw on that plane and in those seats at that moment for a reason. Bynum and Shaw attribute their actions to God and know that they can count on Him to get them through any situation; and

Whereas, Bynum, who is happy to be back with his family, said that his relationship with God has been strengthened through his experience and that, instead of teaching of God's love, he was the one who learned a true lesson of God's mercy and His love. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, commend Clarke Bynum for the valiant display of heroism he exhibited by subduing a deranged passenger and saving the lives of the three hundred ninety-eight people aboard his British Airways flight from London to Nairobi, Kenya.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Clarke Bynum.
