A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE MR. JACK E. DANEL OF W.R. GRACE AND COMPANY VERMICULITE MINES AND MILL NEAR ENOREE AND A RESIDENT OF GREENVILLE COUNTY WHO WAS SELECTED THE 1990 MINER OF THE YEAR BY THE MINING ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Mr. Jack Danel of W.R. Grace and Company Vermiculite Mines and Mills near Enoree and a resident of Greenville was selected the 1990 Miner of the Year by the Mining Association of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the award is presented each year for outstanding contributions to mining in South Carolina in fields such as reclamation, resource conservation, mining operations, public service, and community involvement; and

Whereas, Mr. Danel, a native of Beeville, Texas, is General Manager of the facility, and it has received fourteen awards for mine reclamation and mine safety over the past ten years; and

Whereas, the facility operations received the Mine Reclamation Award for 1989 from the National Association of State Land Reclamationists and a Sentinels of Safety Award for the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration; and

Whereas, Mr. Danel served as President of the Mining Association for 1989 and 1990. He has been appointed to the South Carolina Mining Council by Governor Carroll Campbell where he serves as chairman. A 1968 graduate of the Colorado School of Mines, he received a Masters Degree in Busines from the University of Arizona in 1976. He serves as a consumer arbitrator with the Better Business Bureau and is a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers; and

Whereas, the Mining Association of South Carolina is a trade organization which promotes the interests and welfare of the state's mining industry; and

Whereas, the industry itself is very active with two hundred seventy-one mines in forty-five of our forty-six counties; and

Whereas, over a dozen different minerals are dug from the ground and put to work in South Carolina's economy; and

Whereas, the mining industry employs over two thousand nine hundred people and generates more than five hundred million dollars annually in the economy of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mr. Danel and his wife Libby, reside in Greenville. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution recognize and congratulate Mr. Jack E. Danel of W.R. Grace and Company Vermiculite Mines and Mill near Enoree and a resident of Greenville who was selected the 1990 Miner of the Year by the Mining Association of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Danel.
