A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE LIONS OF DANIEL HIGH SCHOOL IN CENTRAL, SOUTH CAROLINA, ON WINNING THE 1998 CLASS AAA STATE BOYS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are proud to have an opportunity to recognize the Central, South Carolina, Daniel High School "Lions" boys cross country team on their successful 1998 season and on being named the 1998 State Class AAA Champions; and

Whereas, recognizing that running cross country is an individual and a team effort, it is important to acknowledge the many long, arduous hours of distance running and training that these eight team members put in for their team; and

Whereas, the team, which is coached by Ron Sullivan, consists of Nick Grossman, Carter McCrary, Travis Smith, Greg Szmurlo, Jesse Woodard, Thad Dulin, and Conrad Shuler; and

Whereas, this team was undefeated in its regular season with a record of six wins, zero losses, and in its Region 1 Class AAA competition the team achieved five wins; and

Whereas, in the series of qualifying meets leading up to the state championship, this remarkable team took first place in the Pickens County meet, first place in the Region 1 Class AAA championship, came in second place in the Upper State qualifying meet, and culminated its efforts by taking first place at the State Class AAA championship meet; and

Whereas, there were many individuals who deserve special mention on this team: Jesse Woodard was selected as the individual Class AAA state champion; the Shrine Bowl Run selections were Jesse Woodard, Greg Szmurlo, and Travis Smith; the All Region selections were four seniors: Jesse Woodard, Travis Smith, Greg Szmurlo, and Nick Grossman, a junior, Thad Dulin, and a freshman, Conrad Shuler; and the All State selections were Jesse Woodard, Conrad Shuler, Greg Szmurlo, and Thad Dulin; and

Whereas, Coach Ron Sullivan was recognized for his hard work and abilities by being named the Region 1 Class AAA Coach of the Year and the South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Coach of the Year; and

Whereas, the success of the 1998 Daniel High School cross country team brings great pride and recognition not only to Pickens County, but also to the Palmetto State; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly would like to publicly recognize and congratulate each player and the coach upon the conclusion of a truly memorable season. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring,

That the members of the General Assembly express their hearty congratulations to the "Lions" of Daniel High School in Central, South Carolina, on winning the 1998 Class AAA boys state cross country championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Coach Ron Sullivan of the Daniel High School cross country team.
