A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS AND COMMENDATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE NAVY JUNIOR ROTC DRILL TEAM OF SILVER BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL IN AIKEN COUNTY ON BEING NAMED THE "SOUTH CAROLINA NAVY JUNIOR ROTC STATE CHAMPION" AT THE STATEWIDE DRILL COMPETITION SPONSORED BY THE NROTC UNIT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, ON MARCH 27, 1999, AND TO WISH THE TEAM CONTINUED SUCCESS AT THE NATIONAL DRILL MEET TO BE HELD AT THE NAVY'S TRAINING CENTER IN GREAT LAKES, ILLINOIS, ON APRIL 9 AND 10, 1999.

Whereas, Silver Bluff High School in Aiken County has cause to be extremely proud of its Navy Junior ROTC unit and drill team; and

Whereas, its Navy Junior ROTC drill team practiced diligently and competed in eight drill meets during the year; they won four of them, finished second three times and fourth for the only other meet. In these meets there is no differentiation between the size of schools so that Silver Bluff High School, a Class AA school, competed very successfully in drill competitions against many larger Class AAAA schools; and

Whereas, the drill team's superb performance resulted in their receiving ninety-five trophies for their precision marching in which the drills included the team putting their rifles through a variety of intricate spins and throws while maintaining strict military bearing; their state performances culminated on March 27, 1999, at the University of South Carolina in Columbia where the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Statewide Drill Championship was held. It consisted of six events: the regulation armed platoon, regulation unarmed platoon, regulation armed squad, regulation unarmed squad, fancy armed platoon, and fancy unarmed platoon; and

Whereas, the Silver Bluff Navy Junior ROTC unit captured first place in an outstanding performance and was declared the "State Champion". The drill team has been invited to compete in the National Drill Meet against the top twenty Navy Junior ROTC schools in the nation this coming weekend, April 9 and 10, 1999, at the Navy's Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois; and

Whereas, each member of this drill team is to be commended for his dedication, hard work, and countless hours of practice and marching; they are: Drill Team Commander: Cadet Lieutenant Ryan Strader; Team members: Cadet Lieutenant Commander Gerald Bush, Cadet Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Stephen Hatcher, Cadet Ensign Phillip Boynton, Cadet Ensign Henry Hamilton, Cadet Ensign Tremaine Bush, Cadet Ensign Joshua Gouge, Cadet Chief Petty Officer Brian Williams, Cadet Chief Petty Officer James Rowell, Cadet Petty Officer First Class Josh Pinkard, Cadet Petty Officer First Class David Gay, Cadet Petty Officer First Class Daniel Cannella, Cadet Petty Officer Second Class Jason Key, Cadet Petty Officer Second Class Robert Preston, Cadet Petty Officer Second Class David Steelman, and Cadet Petty Officer Third Class Allen Weathersbee; and

Whereas, the Drill Team Instructors, who have been so instrumental in the team's success, are Lieutenant Commander Ronald Freeman and Gunnery Sergeant Darrell Jones. Now therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly extend their congratulations and commendations to the Navy Junior ROTC Drill Team of Silver Bluff High School in Aiken County on being named the "South Carolina Navy Junior ROTC State Champion" at the statewide drill competition sponsored by the NROTC unit at the University of South Carolina, on March 27, 1999, and wish the team continued success at the National Drill Meet to be held at the Navy's Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois, on April 9 and 10, 1999.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Silver Bluff Navy Junior ROTC Drill Team Instructor, Lieutenant Commander Ronald Freeman.
