A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND MONNIE AND EVELYN SINGLETON OF EHRHARDT FOR THEIR DEDICATION TO FAMILY AND FAMILY VALUES EXHIBITED OVER MANY YEARS WHILE RAISING A FAMILY OF NINE OUTSTANDING AND ACCOMPLISHED CHILDREN, AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM AND THE ENTIRE SINGLETON FAMILY ON THE OCCASION OF THE SINGLETON FAMILY BEING NAMED THE 1999 BLACK FAMILY OF THE YEAR BY THE THIRTEENTH ANNUAL NATIONAL BLACK FAMILY SUMMIT.

Whereas, the family is the social unit by which values are nurtured and conveyed by loving and caring parents to succeeding generations, and is the place where roles are defined, where the lines of responsibility and freedom are drawn, and where mutual respect, order, and discipline are taught; and

Whereas, children learn by observing and the family is where one begins to experience and understand love, compassion, and a deep personal relationship with God, and is where individuals, brothers, sisters, parents, and other family members learn to grow and work together; and

Whereas, with fidelity, trust, acceptance, an intention of permanence, mutual service, and empowerment, Monnie and Evelyn Singleton, by their mutual consent of heart and mind, turned their marriage into a truly outstanding, close-knit, and enviable family experience for themselves and their wonderful children; and

Whereas, in addition to weathering the stresses and strains of life, and overcoming all obstacles the modern world puts in the way of having a successful marriage, Monnie and Evelyn Singleton fed, sheltered, clothed, cared for, educated, and loved each of their nine children as though each child was their only child; and

Whereas, the nine children of Monnie and Evelyn Singleton, Norma "Peggy" Singleton Jordon, Danny Singleton, Joe Singleton, Yvonne Singleton, Monnieque Singleton, M.D., Vernita Singleton, Kimberly Singleton-Slater, Arnold Singleton, and Curtis Singleton, loved their parents and each other, and learned to depend on each other, and all have obtained an education and gone on to make substantial contributions in responsible positions in the fields of social work, business, education, medicine, engineering, government or the military, while clinging to and passing on the cherished memories, traditions, and family values instilled in them by their loving parents; and

Whereas, in recognition of their love and devotion to their children and to each other, their determination to provide for and educate their nine children, and because they represent the ideal in family values, Monnie and Evelyn Singleton were recently named the 1999 National Black Family of the Year by the thirteenth annual National Black Family Summit. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Monnie and Evelyn Singleton of Ehrhardt for their dedication to family and family values exhibited over many years while raising a family of nine outstanding and accomplished children, and congratulate them and the entire Singleton family on the occasion of the Singleton family being named the 1999 Black Family of the Year by the thirteenth annual National Black Family Summit.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Monnie and Evelyn Singleton of Ehrhardt.
