A BILL
TO AMEND SECTION 16-13-110, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH
CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE OFFENSE OF
SHOPLIFTING, SO AS TO INCREASE THE VALUE OF THE
MERCHANDISE FROM FIFTY DOLLARS TO TWO HUNDRED
DOLLARS WHERE THE PUNISHMENT IS LIMITED TO TWO
HUNDRED DOLLARS OR THIRTY DAYS.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Section 16-13-110(B)(1) of the 1976 Code is amended
to read:
"(1) By a fine of not more than six hundred dollars or
imprisonment for not more than six months, or both, for the first offense.
If the value of the shoplifted merchandise is less than fifty
two hundred dollars, the punishment must be a fine of not more
than two hundred dollars or imprisonment for not more than thirty
days."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
