S. 1291

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY OF THE LATE CLARENCE EUGENE PRESSLEY ON THE HONOR OF RECEIVING RECOGNITION BY THE CITY AND COUNTY OF ABBEVILLE, THE ABBEVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY, AND THE ABBEVILLE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BY THE PLACEMENT OF AN HISTORIC MARKER ON THE SITE OF HIS PRINCIPAL BUSINESS IN THE CITY OF ABBEVILLE, HIS INDUCTION INTO THE 2004 ABBEVILLE COUNTY HALL OF FAME, AND THE RENAMING OF A PORTION OF SPRING STREET TO "CLARENCE E. PRESSLEY PLACE" IN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF HIS LIFETIME OF PHILANTHROPY, BUSINESS LEADERSHIP, AND COMMITMENT TO BETTERING HIS COMMUNITY.

Whereas, as a leader in the Abbeville business, church, and civic communities in the early 1900's, Mr. Pressley owned several businesses throughout the city; and

Whereas, Mr. Pressley's business enterprises included a barbershop, a pool hall, a beauty shopNext, a restaurant on Spring Street, a community market on Branch Street, a restaurant on Church Street, and Smitty's Automotive Repair PreviousShop over a period of more than forty years; and

Whereas, Mr. Pressley was greatly respected throughout his community for his love of God and man and his philanthropy; and

Whereas, a devoted member of Shady Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church, Mr. Pressley was also a charter member of Dreher Masonic Lodge No. 370 of Abbeville and other benevolent societies and his leadership was instrumental in registering African Americans to vote; and

Whereas, Mr. Pressley along with his wife, Maude, raised six children to adulthood, Mary Jean, Dorothy Mae, John Wilbert, Gloria Frances, Wallace Conway, and Betty Joan, all of whom graduated from college or vocational school and have followed his example of leadership in the church, community, and their professions. An additional child, Clarence Eugene, died in infancy; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the General Assembly posthumously recognizes Clarence Eugene Pressley on the occasion of the unveiling of a permanent marker on Spring Street and the renaming of a portion of Spring Street to "Clarence E. Pressley Place" by the Abbeville City Council and the induction to the 2004 Abbeville County Hall of Fame by the Abbeville Chamber of Commerce and the Abbeville Historical Society to memorialize his accomplishments for future generations. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend their congratulations to the family of the late Clarence Eugene Pressley on the honor of receiving recognition by the City and County of Abbeville, the Abbeville Historical Society, and the Abbeville Chamber of Commerce by the placement of an historic marker on the site of his principal business in the City of Abbeville, his induction into the 2004 Abbeville County Hall of Fame, and the renaming of a portion of Spring Street to "Clarence E. Pressley Place" in acknowledgement of his lifetime of philanthropy, business leadership, and commitment to bettering his community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Pressley's oldest living child, Mrs. Dorothy Pressley Turner.
