THE COMMITTEE ON

INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H. 3707), to request that the University of South Carolina schedule at least one Southeastern Conference basketball game, etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same, and recommend that the same do pass:

DEWITT WILLIAMS, for Committee.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA SCHEDULE AT LEAST ONE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE BASKETBALL GAME EACH SEASON FEATURING THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA BASKETBALL TEAM, THE FIGHTING GAMECOCKS, IN THE NORTH CHARLESTON COLISEUM.

Whereas, the North Charleston Coliseum stands as the culmination of an idea of the North Charleston Citizens Advisory Council which began in 1976; and

Whereas, despite numerous delays and setbacks, not the least of which was Hurricane Hugo, the coliseum project, once given priority, provided three hundred forty construction jobs for twenty months; and

Whereas, the coliseum provides thirty permanent jobs and contract laborers for coliseum events. Gross revenue is estimated at eight million dollars, and the regional economic impact including lodging, meals, fuel, and shopping is estimated to be 11.8 million dollars; and

Whereas, eighty feet tall, 190,101 gross square feet, and seating 13,628 people, the coliseum is a multipurpose arena for concerts, circuses, ice shows, conventions, expositions, graduations, and most importantly, for purposes of this resolution, for sporting events; and

Whereas, the great people of the tricounty area, Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties, and the South Carolina Lowcountry, since the University of South Carolina opened its doors, have supported the University through their contributions, spirited devotion, and particularly their young people, the area's greatest resource, who attend the University; and

Whereas, the North Charleston Coliseum is the largest of its type in South Carolina and provides a perfect setting to allow the South Carolina Lowcountry an opportunity to express its enthusiastic support for the University of South Carolina Basketball Team. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the University of South Carolina schedule at least one Southeastern Conference basketball game each season featuring the University of South Carolina Basketball Team, the Fighting Gamecocks, in the North Charleston Coliseum.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to University of South Carolina President Dr. John M. Palms.
