A HOUSE RESOLUTION TO OFFER CONGRATULATIONS TO THE DUNES GOLF AND BEACH CLUB
OF MYRTLE BEACH ON THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS ESTABLISHMENT AND TO JOIN
IN CELEBRATION WEEK WITH ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, TRUSTEES, AND MEMBERS DURING
JUNE 22-27, 1998.
06/16/98 House Introduced and adopted HJ-5
A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO OFFER CONGRATULATIONS TO THE DUNES GOLF AND
BEACH CLUB OF MYRTLE BEACH ON THE FIFTIETH
ANNIVERSARY OF ITS ESTABLISHMENT AND TO JOIN IN
CELEBRATION WEEK WITH ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS,
TRUSTEES, AND MEMBERS DURING JUNE 22-27, 1998.
Whereas, when subscribers met at the end of May, 1948, to discuss
the development of a beach and golf club in Myrtle Beach, they were
responding to the challenge of The Myrtle Beach News to
create recreational facilities to attract year-round residents, as well as
fall, winter, and spring vacationers; and
Whereas, the group submitted a Declaration for Charter to the
Secretary of State and received its charter on June 22, 1948; and
Whereas, construction began on the golf course designed by Robert
Trent Jones, and the first nine holes, now the back nine of the
eighteen-hole course, opened for play only four months later; and
Whereas, by December of 1950, the Dunes Club was a reality: there
was an eighteen-hole course, directed by Jimmy D'Angelo as the first
head professional, a watering system for the greens, and a heated
clubhouse with a dining room and lounge operated by local
restauranteur Olin Davis; and
Whereas, over the years, the Club added swimming pool and dressing
rooms and tennis courts and a tennis pro shop, and renovated or
rebuilt the Clubhouse; and
Whereas, a number of important golf tournaments have been played
at the site, among them major championships of the United States
Golf Association and qualifying for the PGA Tour and USGA
Championships; and
Whereas, the first tournament of the Golf Writer's Association of
America was hosted there in 1954, a memorable event in terms of
letting all of America know about the delights of golf at Myrtle
Beach; and
Whereas, the Club made history in 1966 with the innovative offer of
the golf package, allowing a golfer to secure lodging, breakfast, and
golf course accommodations, including guaranteed starting times;
and
Whereas, the Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration Week includes the
dedication of the Joe C. Ivey Memorial Wall, in recognition of his
contributions, along with George W. "Buster" Bryan,
"Father of the Dunes" and innovator of the golf package;
and William A. Kimbel, owner of the Myrtle Beach News
and instigator of the Club's initial efforts; and
Whereas, the fruition of Kimbel's vision of a year-round haven for
residents and vacationers began with the success of the Dunes Golf
and Beach Club fifty years ago. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That they do hereby offer congratulations to the Dunes Golf and
Beach Club of Myrtle Beach on the fiftieth anniversary of its
establishment and join in Celebration Week with its officers,
directors, trustees, and members during June 22-27, 1998.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
President Sammy Spann on behalf of the Dunes Golf and Beach
Club.
