 OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS AND MANY YEARS OF DEVOTED PUBLIC SERVICE AND TO
 HONOR HIM ON THE OCCASION OF HIS EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY, JUNE 11, 2001.

TO RECOGNIZE MR. SAMUEL B. HUDSON, SR., FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS AND MANY YEARS OF DEVOTED PUBLIC SERVICE AND TO HONOR HIM ON THE OCCASION OF HIS EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY, JUNE 11, 2001.

Whereas, Mr. Samuel Bosket Hudson, Sr., was born to Wilhelminia Commander and Melvin Rodgers Hudson in the Kent section of Georgetown County on June 11, 1921; and

Whereas, after graduating from high school Mr. Hudson attended Tuskegee Institute and was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Commercial Industries. Following graduation he was hired by Tuskegee as the Curator of the Physics Department and laboratory technician; and

Whereas, he served his country with distinction in the United States Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater, Okinawa, and China and upon his return was again hired by Tuskegee Institute; and

Whereas, in 1951 Mr. Hudson was chosen by the Phelps-Stokes Fund of New York, under the auspices of the Marshall Plan, to go to Booker T. Washington Institute in Kakata, Liberia, West Africa to set up a Department of Radio and Electricity; and

Whereas, when Mr. Hudson returned to the States he took over the ownership of Hudson's Garage and Service Station, Automobile and Body Shop; he later operated Hudson's Real Estate Agency and was a licensed real estate broker and a fire and casualty insurance agent. During this time he was involved in developing the Virginia Heights subdivision in Maryville and the Bethel Apartments, both helping to provide reasonable and affordable housing; and

Whereas, Mr. Hudson's entrepreneurial interests have also included the founding and management of radio station WVBX the "Voice of the Black Experience"; and

Whereas, in 1967 Mr. Hudson became the Assistant Director of Horry Georgetown Economic Opportunity Council, Inc. Under his assistance the council grew from a $55,000 to a $3.5 million budget, employing over three hundred employees in three counties with thirteen programs assisting lower income families with housing needs; and

Whereas, he has also been an advocate and crusader for the exercise of personal rights and has traveled extensively throughout Georgetown and Horry counties and the Sixth Congressional District providing training and assistance in registering citizens to vote; and

Whereas Mr. Hudson is the loving husband of Sarah Vermelle Thompson Hudson of Jonesville with whom he celebrated fifty-seven years of marriage on December 22, 2000. They are the proud parents of four children: Whyllys, Bosket, Pat, and Mel, seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mr. Hudson has lived a life of dedicated public service and contribution and he has been an outstanding leader and exemplary role model for citizens not only in the Georgetown County area, but also across the State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize Mr. Samuel B. Hudson, Sr., for his outstanding contributions and many years of devoted public service and honor him on the occasion of his eightieth birthday, June 11, 2001.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Samuel B. Hudson, Sr.
