GREENVILLE, ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST DISTINGUISHED CIVIC LEADERS, FOR HIS
MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE TO HIS STATE, THE NATION, HIS
COMMUNITY, AND THE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, UPON HIS RETIREMENT
FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE MR. HERBERT
CURRY GRANGER OF GREENVILLE, ONE OF SOUTH
CAROLINA'S MOST DISTINGUISHED CIVIC LEADERS, FOR
HIS MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE TO
HIS STATE, THE NATION, HIS COMMUNITY, AND THE
MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, UPON HIS
RETIREMENT FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE
MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, Herbert Curry Granger was born May 25, 1923, at
Greenville, South Carolina, the son of the late James and Lula
Granger, graduated from West Gantt High School in 1941, and was
elected President of his senior class; and
Whereas, in 1942, Mr. Granger answered his nation's call to the
colors and enlisted in the United States Army Air Force. After basic
training, he was assigned to the 8th Air Force, serving from
November, 1942 to September 1945, two years and four months, with
the 548th Bomb Squadron and 385th Bomb Group in the European
Theater of Operations; and
Whereas, Mr. Granger took good advantage of every opportunity
offered to him while serving in the Army Air Force. He attended
Oklahoma State Teachers College, Edmond, Oklahoma, where he
completed several clerical and business related courses and returned
home to Greenville at the end of World War II, having been
honorably discharged after completing three years of war-time
military service; and
Whereas, Mr. Granger began his postwar public service by serving
on the West Gantt School's Board of Trustees from 1955 to 1958. He
was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1958,
served in the House from 1959 to 1966 and from 1969 to 1984,
serving as first vice-chairman of the Labor, Commerce and Industry
Committee, as a member of the State Reorganization Commission,
the Textile Study Commission, and the Energy Commission. From
1980 to 1984, he was chairman of the Greenville County Legislative
Delegation. In 1984, after twenty-four years of service as a
legislator, Mr. Granger did not offer for reelection and retired from
the House of Representatives; and
Whereas, in addition to legislative service, for a number of years Mr.
Granger was chairman of the Greenville Regional Area
Transportation Study (GRATS), a member and past president of the
Greenville East Rotary Club, and a Paul Harris Fellow. In 1985, in
recognition of his many achievements and contributions to the State
and his community, Mr. Granger was awarded the Order of the
Palmetto by then Governor Carroll Campbell; and
Whereas, Mr. Granger ran for the 4th Congressional District seat and
was elected to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Medical
University of South Carolina, Charleston, in 1984. He faithfully has
served three terms and is slated to retire from the Medical University
Board of Trustees upon the expiration of his current term; and
Whereas, Mr. Granger was married to the former Vera Taylor in
1945, and they are blessed with a wonderful family, including their
son, Ronald L. Granger, a grandson, Peterson Granger, and a
granddaughter, Brooke Granger. The Grangers are members of and
attend West Gantt Baptist Church, Greenville. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives hereby commend
and congratulate Mr. Herbert Curry Granger of Greenville, one of
South Carolina's most distinguished civic leaders, for his forty-two
years of outstanding public service to his State, the nation, his
community, and the Medical University of South Carolina upon his
retirement from the Medical University of South Carolina Board of
Trustees.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to
Mr. Herbert Curry Granger of Greenville.
