S. 1355

A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING EDWIN KIRKPATRICK ASHE, SR. ON THE CELEBRATION OF HIS EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY AND WISHING HIM WELL IN THE FUTURE.

Whereas, Edwin Kirkpatrick Ashe, Sr., was born May 6, 1928, in the family home in McConnells, South Carolina, a small village located in York County, and is the sixth child of William Elias Ashe, Sr., and Macie Kirkpatrick Ashe. His father died in 1939, leaving him the responsibility of being "the man of the house". The Depression was still affecting the economy of rural York County, and Mr. Ashe took on many chores, willingly and with a cheerful heart, doing his part in supporting the family; and

Whereas, the Ashe family ancestors were in South Carolina before 1750, arriving down the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road and settling on the upper waters of Fishing Creek in present day York County. Two of Ed's great-grandfathers, John Jackson Ashe and Marcus Hafner, served in Company C, 27th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry during the War Between the States. John's father James and both Grandfathers served in the War of 1812. John's two grandfathers, Robert and William Ashe, both also served in the Revolutionary War. Robert participated in the Battle of Huck's Defeat and Williams Plantation. Both served in the "Snow Campaign" as well. Robert's father, John, is also listed as a "Patriot" by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for service provided to patriots; and

Whereas, Mr. Ashe married the love of his life, the late Anita Kirby of Chester on June 19, 1954, and they had four sons, twins Kirk and Kirby, Charles, and Bryan, fourteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mr. Ashe attended high school in York and Richburg, attended the Citadel, and in 1951, graduated from Presbyterian College with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps and as a civilian working in the defense industry during the "Cold War" era; and

Whereas, Mr. Ashe was employed with Carolina Life Insurance Company in Lancaster, worked in construction for DuPont at the Savannah River Plant, and later transferred to DuPont Operations, where he was assigned to the Clerical Department and worked in all production areas. He was present when the first nuclear production reactor went "critical" in 1953; and

Whereas, Mr. Ashe is a member of Fairview Presbyterian Church, and is an avid supporter of the North Augusta Yellow Jacket Club. He enjoys spendingNext time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and Previousspending time at his beach house in North Myrtle Beach. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Edwin Kirkpatrick Ashe, Sr. on the celebration of his eightieth birthday and wish him well in the future.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Edwin Kirkpatrick Ashe, Sr.
