H. 3640

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE SERGEANT JOSEPH CHASE STEWART OF THE FIRST ARMORED DIVISION FOR HIS EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE AND COURAGE WHILE SERVING IN THE MIDDLE EAST, AND TO HONOR HIM FOR RECEIVING THE ARMY COMMENDATION MEDAL WITH VALOR.

Whereas, it is with great pride that the House of Representatives pauses to recognize the immeasurable sacrifices that members of the United States Armed Forces make on our behalf every day; and

Whereas, Sergeant Joseph Chase Stewart stands as a shining example of what it means to be a United States soldier; and

Whereas, on March 30, 2006, Sergeant Stewart was recognized with The Army Commendation Medal for exceptionally valorous performance in the face of the enemy; and

Whereas, disregarding his own personal safety, he acted quickly in returning fire upon an insurgent who threw a hand grenade, saving the lives of the other soldiers and enabling a solider wounded in the grenade attack to receive medical attention; and

Whereas, Sergeant Stewart serves in Bravo Company, First Battalion, of the 36th Infantry Regiment; and

Whereas, a 2001 graduate of Palmetto High School, Sergeant Stewart enlisted in the United States Army in July 2002. After serving in Iraq from May 2003 until July 2004, he returned to Iraq for a second tour in January 2006; and

Whereas, Sergeant Stewart is the son of proud parents, Karen and Robbie Cochrane and Joey Stewart. He also has a brother, Cody, and a sister, Nikki; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives is proud to honor this brave South Carolina son for his outstanding commitment to his country and wishes him a safe return to a state that respects and admires his many sacrifices. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize Sergeant Joseph Chase Stewart of the First Armored Division for his exceptional service and courage while serving in the Middle East, and honor him for receiving The Army Commendation Medal with Valor.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Sergeant Joseph Chase Stewart.
