 AGRICULTURE IN SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM AND HIS FAMILY

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE THE HONORABLE D. LESLIE PreviousTINDALNext OF PINEWOOD FOR TWENTY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS COMMISSIONER OF AGRICULTURE IN SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM AND HIS FAMILY UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to recognize the Honorable D. Leslie PreviousTindalNext of Pinewood for his lifetime of hard work and dedication to the farmers of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Commissioner PreviousTindalNext was born on May 4, 1928, to David Leslie and Lela Norris PreviousTindalNext in Pinewood. He attended Pinewood public schools and graduated from Furman University; and

Whereas, Mr. PreviousTindalNext began his career in farming in 1949, planting cotton, corn, soybeans, and some grains, oats, and wheat; he later began growing certified seed and continues to do so today; and

Whereas, Commissioner PreviousTindalNext, along with other soybean farmers, established the South Carolina Soybean Association. Mr. PreviousTindalNext was named president at one of the first meetings, and he served as president of the association from 1966 to 1976, during which time he traveled the world making contacts that would serve him and the State well later as agriculture commissioner; and

Whereas, Mr. PreviousTindalNext was elected Commissioner of Agriculture in 1982 and faithfully served in that capacity until his retirement in 2002; and

Whereas, during his first week in office, Mr. PreviousTindalNext started work on the Pee Dee Farmer's Market that has held the largest flower show in terms of sales in the Southeast for eighteen years; and

Whereas, Commissioner PreviousTindalNext has brought new crops to South Carolina including kiwi fruit. He has supported farmers through drought times and has encouraged new technology that helps South Carolina farmers to be more profitable; and

Whereas, in addition to his position as Commissioner of Agriculture, Mr. PreviousTindalNext has been involved in many organizations including the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, the South Carolina Crop Improvement, South Carolina Cattlemen, South Carolina Seedsmen, South Carolina Soybean Associations, and the County Farm Bureau. He also served on the Board of Trustees of Clemson University for ten years; and

Whereas, Commissioner PreviousTindalNext and his wife May married in June of 1948 and have four children, Elizabeth PreviousTindalNext Ducworth, Amelia PreviousTindalNext Hadegan, Virginia PreviousTindalNext Rhodes, and David Leslie PreviousTindalNext III, and eight grandchildren; and he is returning to Pinewood to work on his family farm with May, his son David, and his son-in-law John Ducworth; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives extol D. Leslie PreviousTindalNext for his outstanding and valuable service as agriculture commissioner and thank him for twenty years of service to the farmers and citizens of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives commend and congratulate the Honorable D. Leslie PreviousTindalNext of Pinewood for twenty years of dedicated service as Commissioner of Agriculture in South Carolina, and extend best wishes to him and his family upon his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Commissioner PreviousTindal.
