 MEMBER OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THE SOUTH CAROLINA
 SENATE, AND WISHING HIM WELL IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

THANKING THE HONORABLE JOHN R. RUSSELL OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY, OUR FRIEND AND ESTEEMED COLLEAGUE, FOR HIS DEDICATED SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE, AND WISHING HIM WELL IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the Honorable John R. Russell of Spartanburg County served with distinction in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1983 through 1987, when he was elevated to the South Carolina Senate and served Spartanburg County through the 2000 Legislative Session; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were saddened to learn that Senator Russell is retiring this year as a member of the Senate; and

Whereas, he was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of the Honorable Donald S. Russell and Virginia U. Russell; and

Whereas, he is a 1970 graduate of Christ School in Arden, North Carolina, received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of South Carolina in 1973, and received his Doctorate of Juris Prudence from the St. Mary's of Texas Law School in 1978; and

Whereas, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Robert W. Hemphill, United States District Court Judge in 1979; staff counsel to the United States Senate Judiciary Committee in 1981; and Assistant to the President Pro Tempore of the United States Senate, The Honorable Strom Thurmond in 1981; and

Whereas, Senator Russell is a former Civitan member and serves on both the Piedmont Foundation Board of the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg and the SCOPA Board; and

Whereas, he is a private pilot with a multi-engine fixed-wing instrument rating; and

Whereas, he is a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent located in Spartanburg; and

Whereas, Senator Russell is married to the former Jane McCall, and together they are the proud parents of three children; and

Whereas, he has demonstrated vision and leadership while serving in both the South Carolina House of Representatives and the South Carolina Senate, as well as a genuine commitment to serving the needs of all South Carolinians. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, thank the Honorable John R. Russell of Spartanburg County, our friend and esteemed colleague, for his many years of dedicated service as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives and the South Carolina Senate.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Senator Russell.
