VERSIONS OF THIS BILL

5/28/2003

H. 4308

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE MEMBERS, MINISTERS, STAFF, AND FRIENDS OF THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF LANDRUM ON THE OCCASION OF THE CELEBRATION OF ITS TWO HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR.

Whereas, church records first record a meeting on December 17, 1803, on the banks of Wolfe's Creek and the North Pacolet River, in Earlesville in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, which is now located just outside the town of Landrum. A group of dedicated believers formed a place of worship as a mission of Green Creek Baptist Church which is located in the nearby community of Green Creek, North Carolina, which is now located in Polk County; and

Whereas, at this time there was no Landrum, very little of Spartanburg, no churches of any kind in what was Spartanburg, but preaching was sometimes held at the county courthouse; and

Whereas, from this humble beginning, the Wolfe's Creek Society, as it was known, with God's help grew to be one of the most historic and distinguished churches in South Carolina, the First Baptist Church of Landrum; and

Whereas, the history of this great church is one of hardship and struggle and of faith and devotion to God and to mankind; and

Whereas, the facilities of the church have grown from a log cabin to a wonderful, modern complex with multiple wings. Its list of ministers include some of the most distinguished preachers in South Carolina, and its congregation through the years with generosity and humility has been steadfast in their devotion to and following of God's word; and

Whereas, special programs and services in October will highlight the observance of First Baptist's anniversary celebration; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and acknowledge two hundred years of humble devotion to God by this wonderful group of Christians and extend to the church and its members the General Assembly's best wishes and prayers for another two hundred years of joyful and obedient service to God. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the members, ministers, staff, and friends of the First Baptist Church of Landrum on the occasion of the celebration of its two hundredth anniversary this year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the congregation of the First Baptist Church of Landrum.
