EXTENDING GREETINGS TO THE TONEY FAMILY OF LEE AND SUMTER COUNTIES AND WISHING THE FAMILY MEMBERS WELL AS THEY GATHER JULY 1, 2000, IN ELLIOTT, SOUTH CAROLINA, TO CELEBRATE THEIR SIXTH FAMILY REUNION AND PROUD HISTORY AS SOUTH CAROLINIANS.

Whereas, the Toney family will gather on July 1, 2000, to celebrate its rich and fascinating history; and

Whereas, that history was first recorded in the 1850 United States Census, with the Reverend Louis Toney, his wife, Clara, and their twelve children; and

Whereas, the family has been traced back to the early 1820's to the Goodwill area of Sumter County where the Reverend Louis Toney's father was a slave; and

Whereas, the Reverend Toney, himself, was born a slave in 1844, on the Cooper Plantation; and

Whereas, by 1880, the Census shows the post-Civil War family as residing in the Mount Clio township of Sumter County, with the Reverend Toney occupied as a farmer and Clara as a housekeeper; and

Whereas, that record also reflects the family's strong belief in the advantages of education, in that it indicates that all the Toney household could read and write, except three-year old Wisdom; and

Whereas, the family history also demonstrates the Toney's early and enduring reliance on spirituality and religious faith, and the Reverend Toney was instrumental in acquiring the Cootersboro Church, now New Zion United Methodist Church, from the Cooper family as a public place of worship for the slaves; and

Whereas, the Toney family is proud to celebrate its proud beginnings and its many successes and contributions to the Lee and Sumter Counties and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, do hereby extend greetings to the Toney Family of Lee and Sumter Counties and wish the family members well as they gather July 1, 2000, in Elliott, South Carolina, to celebrate their sixth family reunion and proud history as South Carolinians.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Joyce Slater Fortune, President, the Toney Family Reunion Organization.
