A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE SIDNEY L. GAULDEN UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AS LEGISLATIVE LIAISON FOR THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY, TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SERVICE, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH HAPPINESS AND FULFILLMENT IN THE YEARS TO COME.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Sidney L. Gaulden upon the occasion of his retirement as legislative liaison for the South Carolina Department of Public Safety; and

Whereas, Sidney L. Gaulden is an alumnus of the University of South Carolina and the College of Charleston. A veteran of the United States Marine Corps Reserves, he served from 1964 to 1970 and left with the rank of sergeant; and

Whereas, prior to his service with the Department of Public Safety, Mr. Gaulden worked for WUSN/WCBD TV Channel 2 as a reporter; the College of Charleston as a public information officer; and The Post and Courier, which he served for twenty-five years as a copy editor, sports writer, and capitol correspondent; and

Whereas, Mr. Gaulden began his twenty-one-year career with the South Carolina Department of Public Safety in 1999 as the director of the Office of Executive Affairs. In this role, he was responsible for media relations, legislative and ombudsman issues, and the organization of highway safety public information and education campaigns. He also served as the department's chief spokesperson; and

Whereas, as legislative liaison and the program director of legislative affairs, he oversaw the flow of information between the agency and the South Carolina General Assembly; monitored the filing of proposed legislation in both the Senate and the House of Representatives; and provided information to legislators, their staff, and the Governor's Office. He also helped prepare the department's staff for appearances before subcommittees; and

Whereas, Mr. Gaulden is married to his wife, Debra. Together, they have three sons, two daughters, and thirteen grandchildren; and

Whereas, in his free time, he enjoys photography, golf, and reading; and

Whereas, the Senate is grateful for the passion, commitment, and dedication that this son of South Carolina has shown in serving the people and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Sidney L. Gaulden upon the occasion of his retirement as legislative liaison for the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, commend him for his many years of distinguished public service, and wish him much happiness and fulfillment in the years to come.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Sidney L. Gaulden.
