H. 5296

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR THE REVEREND RANDOLPH MILLER, PASTOR OF GREATER UNITY AME CHURCH IN HOLLY HILL, FOR A LIFETIME OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE AME CHURCHES OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND HIS COMMUNITY AND TO WISH HIM MUCH CONTINUED BLESSING AND FULFILLMENT IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

Whereas, it is with much pleasure that the South Carolina House of Representatives recognizes those individuals who give tirelessly of themselves to the welfare of this great state's citizenry. Having spent his life serving others, the Reverend Randolph Miller exemplifies such South Carolinians; and

Whereas, one of five sons born to the late Reverend Clifton and Mrs. Bertha Miller of Charleston, the Reverend Randolph Miller came into this world in Beaufort and attended the public schools of Beaufort County. When his father was transferred to Charleston, he furthered his education in the Charleston County public school system; and

Whereas, the young Randolph graduated from M. Rutledge Rivers High School and received a bachelor's degree in English communications from Knoxville College in Tennessee. He also attended Erskine Theological Seminary and received his master's degree in divinity from Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, Ohio; and

Whereas, in addition to pastoring his own congregation, Reverend Miller serves his denomination. He is a member of the South Carolina Annual Conference of the 7th Episcopal District and is a trustee for the conference. He writes the organization's resolutions and coordinates the state choir for the 7th Episcopal District; and

Whereas, over the course of his ministry, he has served two years at Bethel AME Church (Edisto Island), fifteen years at Emanuel AME West Ashley (Charleston), and thirteen years at Nichols Chapel AME Church (Charleston). Presently, he serves as the first pastor, Charleston District, Greater Unity AME Church (Holly Hill); and

Whereas, moreover, after twenty-nine years of service, Randolph Miller retired from Charleston's WCSC-TV, where he worked in production, was a master control switcher engineer, and hosted Randolph's Journal for seven years, as well as Inspirational Sounds. Following a brief retirement, Reverend Miller was called back to host the talk show Bounce Around Charleston, which has been broadcast on the Bounce Network for ten years; and

Whereas, Reverend Miller believes strongly in personal involvement with his community, and his convictions have led him to serve that community in several capacities. These include service on the board of Trident United Way and the City of Charleston Tourism Board. Further, he has served as president of the Charleston Community AME Ministerial Alliance, as a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and as a member of the City of Charleston MLK Monument Committee. For his committed service, Randolph Miller has received various honors. Most notably, he is recognized for his rendition of the song "'Tis the Old Ship of Zion" at the homegoing service of Senator Clementa Pinckney; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives recognize that the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of its communities, and the vitality of American society as a whole depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of individuals like Randolph Miller who use their talents and resources to serve others. Gratefully, the House acknowledges Reverend Miller's invaluable contributions to this great State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor the Reverend Randolph Miller, pastor of Greater Unity AME Church in Holly Hill, for a lifetime of dedicated service to the AME churches of South Carolina and his community and wish him much continued blessing and fulfillment in the days ahead.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Reverend Randolph Miller.
