A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING DR. ALLEN D. EDWARDS OF ROCK
HILL ON HIS SELECTION AS THE "1995
OUTSTANDING OLDER SOUTH CAROLINIAN".
Whereas, Dr. Allen D. Edwards of Rock Hill has been selected to
receive the 1995 Outstanding Older South Carolinian Award by the
Office of the Governor, Division on Aging; and
Whereas, the award is to be presented to Dr. Edwards at a reception
in his honor in the Vista Room of the State Museum on May 18,
1995; and
Whereas, each year, since 1971, the Governor's Office, Division on
Aging, honors a South Carolinian, age sixty-five or older who,
through his or her leadership, has rendered outstanding and ongoing
contributions to aging-related teaching, research, service delivery,
and/or advocacy on the community, regional, or state level; and
Whereas, the recipient of this prestigious award for 1995, Dr. Allen
Edwards, is eighty-nine years young and is a retired Winthrop
College professor and former state director of the AARP; he served
as chairman of the Winthrop sociology department from 1944-1971
and was state director of the AARP from 1983-1986; and
Whereas, Dr. Edwards, while at Winthrop, was active in the
formation of the Social Service Workers Club, and in 1950 he
helped prepare York County's first-ever Directory of Social
Resources; and
Whereas, as state director of the AARP, he traveled 10,000 miles
annually in visiting chapters, conducting workshops, recruiting
volunteers, and maintaining liaison with other organizations of
senior citizens; and
Whereas, he was a member of the AARP State Legislative
Committee and worked for the passage of the generic drug bill, the
Probate Code, the Death with Dignity Act, and the Homestead
Exemption; and
Whereas, Dr. Edwards is truly an outstanding individual who is
completely devoted to the cause and interests of older citizens, and
this resolution cannot begin to do justice to him in praising his
many substantive contributions and accomplishments in this area;
and
Whereas, he is highly deserving of the award that has been
bestowed upon him, and the members of the General Assembly are
very pleased to have this opportunity to recognize him in a special
way. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, congratulates Dr. Allen D. Edwards of Rock Hill on his
selection as the "1995 Outstanding Older South
Carolinian".
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Dr. Edwards and also to Constance C. Rinehart, M.S.W., Director,
Office of the Governor, Division on Aging.
