 ATTACK ON JAPAN.

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE PROFOUND APPRECIATION AND DEEPEST RESPECT OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE DOOLITTLE RAIDERS ON THE SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR DARING, HISTORIC, AND PIVOTAL AIR ATTACK ON JAPAN.

Whereas, the Doolittle Raiders undertook a courageous and dangerous counterattack against the home islands of Japan on April 18, 1942, in retaliation for the devastating Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor just months before; and

Whereas, the twenty-three survivors of that unprecedented and pivotal air attack are visiting Columbia on the occasion of their sixtieth reunion; and

Whereas, those returning to the site of their training for the voluntary assignment under Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle are: 34th Squadron--Richard E. Cole, Co-Pilot; Robert L. Hite, Co-pilot; Henry A. Potter, Navigator; Jacob D. DeShazer, Bombardier; and Thomas C. Griffin, Navigator;

    37th Squadron--Travis Hoover, Pilot; Edgard E. McElroy, Pilot; William M. Bower, Pilot; and Clayton J. Campbell, Navigator;

    89th Recon Squadron--J. Roydon Stork, Co-pilot; William L. Birch, Bombardier; Horace E. Crouch, Navigator/Bombardier; Jack A. Sims, Co-pilot; Edwin W. Horton, Jr., Gunner; James H. Macia, Jr., Navigator/Bombardier; Frank A. Kappeler, Navigator; and Edward J. Saylor, Engineer; and

    95th Squadron--Charles J. Ozuk, Navigator; Chase J. Nielsen, Navigator; Harry C. McCool, Navigator; David J. Thatcher, Gunner; David M. Jones, Pilot; and Nolan A. Herndon, Navigator/Bombardier; and

Whereas, their effort served not only to restore the morale of the American people, but also to force changes in Japan's military strategies, resulting ultimately in Japanese defeat in the crucial Battle of Midway; and

Whereas, their "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" have come to represent all that is the best and bravest in the American spirit. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives extend their profound appreciation and deepest respect to the Doolittle Raiders on the Sixtieth Anniversary of their daring, historic, and pivotal air attack on Japan.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to each of the twenty-three survivors.
