A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES OF GREENVILLE IN 2005 AND TO ENCOURAGE THE CONTINUING ACHIEVEMENTS OF THIS OUTSTANDING INSTITUTION IN THE FUTURE.

Whereas, the Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities (GSAH) is a public-private, residential high school funded by both the state and private donors and operated under the direction of a board of trustees, which emphasizes academics as well as the arts; and

Whereas, this prestigious institution is ranked number 127 of the best high schools in the country by Newsweek survey, and the students score far above the state and nationalNext averages on the SAT. In 2005, two students had a perfect verbal SAT score, and one student had a perfect math SAT score; and

Whereas, GSAH in 2005 produced six PreviousNationalNext Merit Finalists, three PreviousNationalNext Achievement finalists, and seven commended students. Also, sixteen members of the graduating class were Palmetto Fellows; and

Whereas, 497 students amassing more than forty-three million dollars in scholarship offers have graduated from the Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities since 1994. Last year's class was offered nine million dollars in scholarships; and

Whereas, the school has won numerous Creative Writing PreviousNationalNext Scholastic awards, it has also won the PreviousnationalNext Nancy Thorpe Poetry competition, and was named one of the two most important School Dance Training Programs in the world at the Youth America Grand Prix international competition; and

Whereas, the faculty are among the top educators in their respective fields. Seventy-eight percent of them are PreviousNationalNext Board Certified, and a number of faculty members publish, exhibit, and perform not only statewide and regionally but PreviousnationallyNext and internationally as well; and

Whereas, the school continues to educate some of South Carolina's most creative, talented, and academically advanced students instilling in them the fundamentals and training needed to help lead and serve our State and Previousnation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the remarkable achievements of the students, faculty, and administration of the Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities of Greenville in 2005 and encourage the continuing achievements of this outstanding institution in the future.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Board of Trustees of the Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities.
